Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to common questions about how LegacyNotes works. Can't find what you're looking for? We're here to help.
Getting Started
Do I need an account to view notes?
Yes. Notes are private by default and require an account and appropriate permissions to view. This ensures your family's stories remain secure and are only accessible to the people you choose. Creating an account is free and takes less than a minute.
How do I create my first note?
After signing up, click 'Compose Note' from your dashboard. Choose between text, audio, or video. Text notes are the most popular and easiest to start with—just give it a title and write your message. You can add images and schedule delivery in the next steps.
Is there a free trial?
Yes! You get full access to create and manage text notes for free. Audio and video notes require a premium subscription, which includes a 30-day free trial so you can test all features risk-free.
Features & Capabilities
Can I schedule messages to be sent later?
Absolutely. Our Timed Delivery feature lets you schedule notes for specific dates (birthdays, graduations, anniversaries) or life events. You can even schedule messages for decades in the future—they'll be delivered exactly when you specify.
What is the Life Timeline feature?
Life Timeline is an interactive visual timeline of your life story. Add milestones, memories, and important moments with dates, descriptions, and photos. It's perfect for organizing your legacy chronologically and helps family members understand your life journey at a glance. Available with premium subscription.
How does AI help me write better notes?
Our AI Idea Generator helps overcome writer's block by suggesting personalized note ideas based on your relationships and occasions. It can help you craft meaningful messages, suggest topics you might not have considered, and even assist with tone and structure. The AI learns from your preferences to provide increasingly relevant suggestions.
Can I attach documents to my notes?
Yes! You can attach up to 5 supporting documents per note. Supported formats include PDF, TXT, DOCX, and XLSX files. This is perfect for sharing important documents like family recipes, legal documents, instructions, or reference materials alongside your message.
What file types are supported?
Audio: MP3, WAV, OGG, WebM, M4A (max 10MB). Video: MP4, WebM, OGG, AVI, MOV (max 50MB). Images: JPG, PNG, GIF (max 5MB). Documents: PDF, TXT, DOCX, XLSX (max 20MB each, up to 5 per note). File size limits are shown when you upload.
How do I designate a trusted heir?
Go to Heir → Your Heir in the menu or click the Add Heir button on your dashboard. Your heir can publish (but never read) your private notes if you become inactive, ensuring your legacy reaches your family even if you can't deliver it yourself. Your heir cannot access note content—they can only trigger delivery to intended recipients.
What happens to my notes if I become inactive?
If you designate a trusted heir, they can trigger the release of your After Passing notes to your family if you become inactive. Your heir never sees the content—they only facilitate delivery. This ensures your important messages reach loved ones even if you're unable to send them yourself.
Security & Privacy
How is my data protected?
Your data is stored on secure cloud infrastructure with SOC 2 Type II certification. We use encryption for data storage and secure transmission with TLS/SSL. Access controls and email verification ensure only authorized family members can access your notes.
Who can see my notes?
Only people you explicitly share with. Notes are private by default. You control exactly who has access to each note, and you can revoke access at any time. We never share your data with advertisers or third parties.
Are my uploaded documents secure?
Yes. Your documents are kept in secure cloud storage and can only be opened through a private link created on demand just for you or the family members you choose. These links expire after a short time, so no one else can use them.
Can my heir read my private notes?
No. Your heir can only trigger the delivery of After Passing notes to intended recipients—they never see the content. This ensures your privacy is maintained while still providing a safety mechanism for message delivery if something happens to you.
